Defence PSU Performance: Shares of Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), the manufacturer of the Akash air defence missile system, witnessed a significant surge on Monday, May 12th. BDL's share price climbed over 5% in early trading, drawing investor attention back to this defence sector company.

BDL's share opened at ₹1599.75 and within minutes reached an intra-day high of ₹1607.80. The company's shares have risen by more than 10% in the last two trading sessions.

Akash Missile System: A b pillar of national security

The Akash missile system is a short-range surface-to-air defence system. According to Bharat Dynamics' website, this system protects the nation's sensitive areas and strategic points from aerial attacks.

This system can target multiple targets simultaneously, either in a group or autonomous mode. The Akash weapon system also incorporates built-in Electronic Counter-Counter Measures (ECCM) features, protecting it from enemy jammers and cyberattacks. The entire system operates on a mobile platform, allowing for easy relocation.

Reports suggest that the Indian armed forces recently deployed the Akash system extensively across 15 Indian cities to deter potential Pakistani attacks, contributing to the rise in BDL's share price.

Stock delivering over 1300% return in 5 years

BDL's stock has delivered exceptional returns to its long-term investors. According to the data:

Q4 FY25 loss, but b topline growth in FY25

Bharat Dynamics reported a net loss of ₹25.7 crore in the fourth quarter (Q4 FY25) of March 2025. The company recorded a profit of ₹10.3 crore in the same quarter of the previous year. The company's revenue in this quarter fell by 80% to ₹20.3 crore, compared to ₹102.3 crore a year ago.

EBITDA also showed a loss of ₹17.41 crore, compared to a profit of ₹20.25 crore in the same period last year. The company attributed this decline to delays in government spending and changes in order timelines.

However, for the entire fiscal year 2025 (FY25), the company:

  • Achieved revenue of ₹3300 crore with 40% growth
  • Increased exports by 640% to ₹1200 crore
  • Secured new orders worth ₹6,668 crore by April 1, 2025
  • Had a total order book of ₹22,700 crore by April 3, 2025
