Floods and landslides continue to wreak havoc in Northeast India, claiming 50 lives and affecting 6.79 lakh people across 21 districts in Assam. Over 1500 villages are submerged.

Floods and Landslides: Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding and landslides across India's northeastern states. Life has been severely disrupted in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, and Manipur. Official figures indicate that 50 people have died, and millions have been affected.

Assam Bears the Brunt

The situation is most critical in Assam, where 19 deaths have been reported – 14 due to floods and 5 due to landslides. Water levels have reached dangerous levels in districts like Morigaon, Sibsagar, and Nagaon, submerging hundreds of villages.

Significant Damage Across Multiple States

Beyond Assam, the devastation extends to Arunachal Pradesh (12 deaths), Meghalaya (6 deaths), Mizoram (5 deaths), Sikkim (4 deaths), Tripura (2 deaths), and one death each in Manipur and Nagaland. Essential services like electricity, water, and communication have been severely impacted in these areas.

Millions Affected, Thousands Homeless

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), approximately 6.79 lakh people across 21 districts have been affected by the floods. 1,494 villages are inundated, with Sibsagar district bearing the brunt, impacting 2.59 lakh people. 190 relief camps have been set up, providing temporary shelter to around 39,746 individuals.

Damage to Crops and Infrastructure

The floods have destroyed crops, submerged fields, and caused significant damage to roads and bridges. Connectivity to some villages has been severed, hindering relief efforts.

Weather Department Issues Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several northeastern states over the next few days. Authorities are on high alert, and relief teams have been deployed with additional resources.

Relief and Rescue Operations Underway

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are engaged in rescue operations. Boats, helicopters, and relief materials are being dispatched to affected areas. The government is urging people to avoid rumors and follow only official instructions.
