E-Passport Features:

  • RFID Chip and Antenna: An embedded RFID chip and antenna in the passport cover securely store the holder's personal and biometric information.
  • Security Protocols: The e-passport adheres to international security standards like Basic Access Control (BAC), Passive Authentication (PA), and Extended Access Control (EAC), ensuring data security.
  • Biometric Data: The passport stores information such as the holder's photo, fingerprints, date of birth, and passport number in an encrypted format.
  • Electronic Identification: A small golden chip symbol on the e-passport cover identifies it as such.

Benefits for Travelers:

  • Faster Immigration Process: E-passport holders will experience faster identity verification at immigration checkpoints, reducing wait times.
  • Enhanced Security: Encrypted data and biometric information minimize the possibility of passport forgery or tampering.
  • Compliance with International Standards: The e-passport complies with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards, making it valid in countries like the USA, UK, Japan, and Australia.

Application Process:

Online Application: The e-passport application process is similar to that of a traditional passport. Applicants must apply through the Passport Seva portal and provide biometric data at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra.

Manufacturing: All e-passports are produced at the Nashik-based India Security Press, aligning with the 'Make in India' initiative.

Information for Existing Passport Holders:

  • Current Passport Validity: Existing traditional passports remain valid until their expiry date.
  • Applying for an E-Passport: Existing passport holders wishing to obtain an e-passport can apply through the Passport Seva portal.
