New Delhi: The government has taken a significant step to simplify healthcare access for senior citizens. Individuals aged 70 and above will now receive free medical treatment up to ₹500,000 annually under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). An Ayushman Vaya Vandana card is being issued for this purpose, enabling free treatment in government and private hospitals across the country.
What is the Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card?
This is a special health ID card issued to senior citizens aged 70 and above. This card allows for free medical treatment up to ₹500,000 annually in recognized hospitals nationwide. This scheme, launched in 2018, has become one of the world's largest government health insurance programs.
Who are the Beneficiaries?
- Indian citizens aged 70 years or older.
- Those possessing a valid Aadhaar card.
- Those with a mobile number linked to their Aadhaar card.
- There is no income limit for this scheme; all senior citizens, regardless of their financial status, can benefit.

How to Apply?
1. Through the Ayushman App:
- Download the 'Ayushman App' from the Google Play Store.
- Login as a Beneficiary.
- Verify using OTP after entering your mobile number and captcha.
- Select the 'Enrollment for 70+' option.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and complete the e-KYC process.
- Upload your photo and fill in the necessary information.
- Submit the form; the card will be ready for download within minutes.
2. Through the Official Website:
- Visit https://pmjay.gov.in.
- Login using your mobile number and captcha.
- Click on 'Enrollment for Senior Citizens (70+)'.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and complete e-KYC via OTP or biometrics.
- Fill in the required details, provide consent, and upload a live photo.
- After submitting, download the card within 15-20 minutes.
Current Status
According to government figures, approximately 6.6 million applications have been received, with around 6.5 million approved. Approximately 96,000 applications are in process, while some have been rejected. Currently, 434 cards have been distributed.
