In Hinduism, the tradition of fasting and observing religious vows is considered ancient and highly significant. Among these observances is the Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat, performed by married women to pray for their husband's longevity and a happy marital life. This fast is primarily observed in North India on Jyeshtha Purnima. In South India, however, the festival is celebrated on the Amavasya tithi.

The origin of the Vat Savitri Vrat is rooted in a mythological tale from the Mahabharata, where Savitri, a wife, retrieved her husband Satyavan's life from Yama, the god of death. Through this vrat, a woman's strength, faith, and determination are revered. In 2025, this sacred fast will be observed on June 10th (Tuesday).

The Story of Savitri and Satyavan: An Immortal Love Story

Savitri, the daughter of King Ashwapati, was extremely beautiful, virtuous, and intelligent. Upon reaching marriageable age, the king sent her to choose her own husband. She chose Satyavan, the son of a hermit couple living in the forest. Satyavan was a pious, truthful, and handsome young man, but he was cursed to die within a year.

Even knowing this, Savitri married Satyavan and resolved to protect him. After marriage, she served her in-laws diligently. As the year neared its end, Savitri began rigorous penance and fasting.

One day, Satyavan went to the forest to cut wood, and Savitri accompanied him. There, Satyavan's time of death arrived, and Yama came to claim his soul. Savitri followed Yama. Yama repeatedly tried to stop her and send her back, but impressed by her devotion, intelligence, and eloquence, he granted her three boons (excluding Satyavan's life):

  1. The restoration of her father-in-law's eyesight and kingdom.
  2. One hundred sons for her father.
  3. One hundred sons for herself.

Yama was astonished, as she could only become the mother of one hundred sons if Satyavan lived. So impressed by her wifely devotion and commitment, Yama restored Satyavan's life.
