Fifteen Dead, Six Critical After Consuming Poisonous Liquor in Amritsar; Police Arrest Suppliers
Punjab News: Fifteen people died and six are critically ill after consuming poisonous liquor in Amritsar, Punjab. The incident occurred in the villages of Maddi and Bhagali in the Majitha area, where several individuals simultaneously fell ill and succumbed to the effects of the tainted alcohol. Police and administrative teams are investigating the incident and taking strict action against the culprits.
Incident and Administrative Response
The incident unfolded on Monday night when locals informed the police about numerous individuals severely ill after consuming spurious liquor. Responding swiftly, the police arrived at the scene. Amritsar Rural SSP Maninder Singh stated that four individuals, including the main supplier Prabhjot Singh, were taken into custody.
During interrogation, Prabhjot Singh revealed that the liquor was supplied by a larger supplier named Sahib Singh. Sahib Singh was subsequently arrested, and investigations are underway to trace the liquor's source.
Strict Police Action and FIRs
Given the severity of the incident, the police have registered two FIRs and the investigation continues. SSP Maninder Singh stated, "We have not only apprehended the accused but are also determined to dismantle the entire network of spurious liquor trade. We are investigating where the liquor was procured from and who was involved in its supply."
Affected Areas and Medical Teams' Deployment
Five villages in Amritsar's Majitha area were affected by the poisonous liquor. Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni visited the affected areas and met with the families. She assured that financial assistance would be provided to the families of the deceased and that medical teams had been deployed to the villages. Those who consumed the liquor are receiving treatment, and doctors are monitoring their condition.
Victims' Accounts and Allegations of Administrative Inaction
Victims reported a rapid deterioration in their health after consuming the liquor, accompanied by vomiting. They were rushed to the hospital, but many died en route. Families allege that the illegal liquor trade had been operating in the area for a considerable time, but the administration failed to take stringent action. Now, following the tragedy, affected families hope for appropriate assistance and justice.
Punjab Government's Strict Action
The Punjab government has taken the incident seriously and decided to take strict action. The Chief Minister has directed relevant officials to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure strict punishment for the culprits. The administration also stated that they would soon completely dismantle the illegal liquor trade network.
