DDA Demolishes Over 300 Illegal Slums in Delhi's Govindpuri; AAP Protests, Questions CM's Promise
Delhi News: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) launched a major demolition drive in Delhi's Govindpuri area, removing over 300 illegal slums. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi questioned the action and raised concerns about its transparency, directly addressing Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
DDA's Bulldozer Action Begins, Heavy Security Deployed
On Wednesday morning, the DDA initiated a bulldozer operation against illegal constructions in a landless camp in Govindpuri. This action aims to remove illegal encroachments on DDA land. Heavy police and paramilitary forces were deployed to maintain law and order and prevent any violence or protests.
Over 300 Slums Removed
According to DDA officials, the operation involved the removal of more than 300 slums. An official stated, "We have deployed sufficient security forces to ensure a peaceful operation. No one will be allowed to create any disturbance."
Prior Notice and Warning Issued
Before the demolition, the DDA issued notices to the slum dwellers, instructing them to vacate the premises within three days. They were warned of administrative action if they failed to comply.
Previous Demolitions
The DDA had conducted similar demolition drives in this area three times previously, in May, June, and July 2024. According to locals, most residents are migrant laborers who had lived in the area for many years.
AAP Leader Atishi Condemns the Action
Senior AAP leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Atishi, expressed her displeasure over the DDA's action. She questioned CM Rekha Gupta about the justification for the demolition, given her recent statement that no slums would be demolished.
Atishi posted on X (formerly Twitter): "BJP's bulldozers started operating on the landless camp at 5 AM. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said three days ago that not a single slum would be demolished. Why is this action being taken?"
