Two Uncles Drown Saving Niece in Ganges River Tragedy

A tragic accident occurred on Sunday along the Ganges River in Kanpur, plunging the entire area into mourning. A family’s joyous picnic turned to grief when two maternal uncles drowned trying to save their niece who had fallen into the deep water.

Kanpur: Sunday began as a typical holiday, with a family arriving at the Ganges for a picnic. However, in moments, this joyful day transformed into a devastating tragedy when the river’s currents claimed the lives of two young brothers. Both men jumped into the deep water to rescue their niece, but lost their own lives in the attempt. This incident caused profound sorrow not only for the family but for the entire region.

A Moment of Carelessness, A Lifetime of Sorrow

This heartbreaking incident took place in the Ganges Ghat area of Kanpur, where a family had gone for an outing. A woman, married about three months prior, had visited her parents' home with her six-year-old daughter. On Sunday, the family planned a picnic and spent time on the banks of the Ganges. Due to the heat, the child went into the water to play. While playing, she drifted into deeper water and began to drown. Hearing her screams, her two maternal uncles – 23-year-old Rohit and 27-year-old Suraj – immediately jumped into the water without hesitation.

Sacrificing Their Lives for Their Niece

According to eyewitnesses, both brothers managed to save the child from drowning, but the b current and depth overwhelmed them. With the help of locals and divers, the child and one uncle were rescued, but it was too late for the other uncle. All three were immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.

Socially, this event became even more poignant because Rohit had been married only three months prior. Amidst the beginning of a new life in the family, this tragedy has left a wound that will take years to heal.

A Village and Family in Mourning

Following the accident, a wave of grief swept through the entire village. Hundreds of people attended the funeral processions of both young men. The women of the family are inconsolable, while the father is devastated with grief. Villagers described Rohit and Suraj as hardworking and amiable young men. They were extremely protective of their niece. "Who knew a smiling Sunday could take such a tragic turn?" said a neighbor.

The Administration's Role and Warning

Upon receiving information about the incident, the local administration and police arrived at the scene. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination. The police questioned those present at the scene and confirmed the accident. The administration appealed to people to exercise caution while swimming or playing in large rivers like the Ganges. They especially urged people not to let children play in the water unsupervised and to keep them away from deep water.
