World's Highest Railway Bridge, Chenab Bridge, to Open June 6th

The 'Chenab Bridge,' a testament to India's engineering and technological prowess, is poised to be unveiled to the public. This is the world's highest railway bridge, and its inauguration is scheduled for June 6th, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Chenab Bridge: The grand inauguration of the Chenab Railway Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, is set to take place over three days. This bridge is a crucial and proud component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, propelling the region towards enhanced connectivity and development. The Chenab Bridge is not only a significant engineering feat but also underscores the geographical and strategic importance of the region.

Sources indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may inaugurate this project on June 6th, bringing new dimensions of development and improved transportation facilities to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Chenab Bridge – A Unique Engineering Achievement

Located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, this bridge spans the Chenab River at a height of 359 meters. This surpasses the height of the Eiffel Tower in France by approximately 35 meters. The bridge's construction utilizes arch technology, lending it not only strength but also unparalleled aesthetic appeal. This 1315-meter-long bridge will directly connect the Indian railway network to the Kashmir Valley, revolutionizing regional transportation.

Construction of the Chenab Bridge commenced in 2003 under the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. The total cost is approximately ₹1486 crore. After nearly 22 years of hard work and dedication, this project is nearing fruition. Overcoming numerous technical challenges throughout this extensive 22-year journey, the bridge stands complete, ready to elevate Indian railway services to new heights.

Technological Marvel While Preserving Riverine Beauty

A key feature of the Chenab Bridge is its construction without obstructing the river's flow. No pillars were erected in the river's path, and the natural river ecosystem remains unharmed. The bridge's design utilizes modern arch technology on both riverbanks.

The bridge's construction involved approximately 29,000 metric tons of steel and a substantial amount of concrete. A total of 17 spans were created, and over six lakh bolts were used to ensure structural integrity.

Bridge Strength and Longevity

The Chenab Bridge is designed using state-of-the-art technology to withstand natural disasters. It is engineered to endure high-velocity winds, earthquakes, and even the impact of a 30-kilogram explosive blast. Experts estimate the bridge's lifespan to be approximately 125 years, reflecting the quality of Indian engineering.

The Chenab Bridge is a crucial part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This project aims to connect Jammu and Kashmir to the rest of India via rail. The inauguration will also include the opening of the Anji Khad Bridge. Furthermore, two Vande Bharat special trains running from Katra to Srinagar will be flagged off on the same day, providing convenient and time-saving travel for passengers.

Significant Contribution to Regional Development and Security

The inauguration of the Chenab Bridge will play a significant role in the socio-economic development of the Jammu and Kashmir region. Rail connectivity will not only boost trade and tourism but also improve the deployment and movement of military and security forces. The bridge's strength and modernity will overcome geographical barriers, enhancing the connectivity of the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has described the bridge as a symbol of the strength and vision of 'New India.' This project showcases Indian technology and self-reliance. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, such projects not only make India globally competitive but also infuse new energy and confidence within the nation.

The inauguration ceremony on June 6th will be attended by numerous dignitaries and officials from across the country. This day will mark a golden chapter in the history of Indian Railways. The opening of the bridge will bring positive changes to the lives of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and strengthen the region's economy.
