CJI Gavai Condemns SCBA's Failure to Hold Farewell for Justice Trivedi

Chief Justice B.R. Gavai expressed displeasure over the Supreme Court Bar Association's (SCBA) failure to provide a farewell to Justice Bela M. Trivedi. He commended Trivedi's diligence and also praised Kapil Sibal.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Bar Association's (SCBA) decision not to hold a farewell for Justice Bela M. Trivedi upon her retirement from the Supreme Court has sparked debate within the judiciary and the legal community. Chief Justice B.R. Gavai openly expressed his disapproval of the association's decision and lauded Justice Trivedi's dedicated service to justice.

Why did the SCBA not hold a farewell?

Traditionally, the SCBA organizes a farewell ceremony for retiring Supreme Court judges. However, the association chose not to do so in Justice Trivedi's case. This decision is believed to be a consequence of internal disputes within the Bar Association, stemming from certain decisions made against some lawyers. This led to the SCBA's unprecedented decision to forgo a farewell ceremony for Justice Trivedi.

CJI B.R. Gavai expresses b displeasure

Commenting on the matter, Chief Justice B.R. Gavai stated, "I must openly condemn this because I believe in speaking the truth. The Association should not have taken such a stance." He praised Justice Trivedi's hard work and dedication to the judiciary, highlighting her inspirational journey from the district judiciary to the Supreme Court.

Praise for Kapil Sibal and Rachna Srivastava

The CJI also commended the SCBA's current president, Kapil Sibal, and vice-president, Rachna Srivastava, for their presence at the event despite the controversy. He stated that their attendance, despite the resolution passed by the body, was commendable and deserving of respect.

Justice Masih appeals to uphold tradition

Supreme Court Justice Augustine George Masih also offered his opinion on the matter, emphasizing the importance of respecting traditions. He stated, "As the CJI said, I regret it, but traditions should be maintained and respected."
