PM Modi Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Gangtok today to mark a historic occasion: the 50th anniversary of Sikkim's merger with India. PM Modi will present several development projects to the people of Sikkim and make significant announcements regarding the state's future.
50 Years of Sikkim's Merger with India
Sikkim merged with India on May 16, 1975, and every year since, May 16th is celebrated as Sikkim State Day. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Sikkim joining India, a "Golden Jubilee" being celebrated with great fanfare. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Gangtok, Sikkim's capital, to make this occasion special.
PM Modi's Program
Prime Minister Modi participated in the main event held at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok. During the ceremony, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several significant projects, including:
- A 500-bed super-specialty hospital in Namchi, costing over ₹750 crore.
- A passenger ropeway project in Peling Sangacholing, Gyalshing district.
- The unveiling of a statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the Atal Amrit Udyan in Sangkhola, Gangtok.
PM Modi also released a commemorative stamp and coin for Sikkim. This event is part of a year-long series of events under the theme "Golden, Prosperous, and Empowered Sikkim."
Sikkim's Merger with India
Sikkim was once an independent kingdom ruled by the Namgyal dynasty. The 1970s saw widespread protests against the monarchy in Sikkim. Following public demand, assembly elections were announced in 1973 and held in 1974. The Sikkim Congress won 31 out of 32 seats, and leaders like Dorji Tashi spearheaded the move towards democracy.
The Sikkim Assembly passed a resolution for merger with India, but the King of Sikkim opposed it. Subsequently, the army intervened and placed the King under house arrest. A referendum was then held, with approximately 97% voting in favor of merger with India. Sikkim was then declared the 22nd state of India.
PM Modi's Significant Role in Sikkim's Development
Prime Minister Modi has consistently emphasized the development of the Northeast. In a recent post, PM Modi congratulated the people of Sikkim on State Day, stating, "Sikkim is a land of gentle beauty, rich cultural traditions, and hardworking people. This state is progressing in various fields."
Under PM Modi's leadership, several schemes are underway to take Sikkim to new heights in infrastructure, healthcare, tourism, and connectivity.
