Apple, a leading global technology company, is rapidly developing India as its production hub. Despite objections and pressure from former US President Donald Trump, Apple has made it clear that it remains committed to expanding iPhone manufacturing in India. The company has announced a significant investment of $1.5 billion (approximately ₹12,500 crore) towards this goal.
Apple's Next Big Move?
According to a Bloomberg report, Hon Hai Precision Industry (also known as Foxconn), a Taiwanese company that manufactures iPhones for Apple, is planning a substantial investment in India. This investment, channeled through the company's Singapore unit, aims to double its production capacity in the country.
Foxconn's new plants in South India will become central to iPhone manufacturing, leading to a significant increase in iPhone production from India in the coming years.
Apple's Target for 2025?
Apple plans to have a majority of iPhones sold in the US manufactured in India by the end of 2025. This move is part of the company's global strategy to reduce its reliance on China and shift manufacturing to strategically important countries like India.
Trump's Warning Unheeded
Recently, Donald Trump urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to keep iPhone production in the US to bolster the American economy. However, Apple clarified that it will continue investing in the US, pledging over ₹50,000 crore in investment over the next four years.
Apple's Manufacturing Partners in India?
- Foxconn: Apple's largest production hub in South India.
- Tata Group: Has become a major partner for Apple.
- Wistron and Pegatron: Tata recently acquired Wistron's Indian operations and is now also handling Pegatron's production.
