Ahmedabad Administration Demolishes 8,500 Illegal Structures in Chandola Lake Area.
Gujarat News: The Ahmedabad administration launched a major demolition drive in the Chandola Lake area, razing approximately 8,500 illegal structures – both temporary and permanent – on May 20th. This area had long been referred to as a 'mini Bangladesh' due to a significant presence of undocumented Bangladeshi citizens.
Large-Scale Operation Lasting from Morning to Evening
The operation, commencing at 6:30 AM on May 20th and concluding at 5:00 PM, involved 35 Hitachi machines and 15 JCBs. Over 3,000 police personnel provided security for this joint operation conducted by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the district administration.
Campaign to Continue on May 21st
This administrative action is not a one-day event. Further demolitions of permanent structures are scheduled for May 21st. Authorities aim to clear the 2.5 lakh square meter Chandola Lake area of all encroachments in a phased manner.
Relocation Options Offered; 3,800 Apply for Housing
The government has provided relief measures for those affected by the demolitions. Approximately 3,800 individuals have applied for housing units, indicating a potential for future legal housing provision.
Majority of Demolished Structures Belonged to Undocumented Bangladeshi Citizens
Sources indicate that most of the demolished structures were occupied by Bangladeshi citizens residing illegally in India. A similar operation in April resulted in the demolition of 3,000 structures in the same area. This current operation is considered 'Chandola Lake Demolition Phase-2'.
Gujarat Police Vigilance
Gujarat police have recently detained thousands of undocumented Bangladeshi citizens, undergoing verification processes. This stringent action follows reports of a large number of illegal immigrants in Ahmedabad.
The primary objective of this operation is to clear the Chandola Lake area of illegal encroachments, curb potential infiltration, and deter future illegal construction and settlement on public land.
