New Delhi, May 2: Strong winds and heavy rain, which began late Thursday night, wreaked havoc in several parts of the capital, Delhi. The most tragic incident occurred in Jafarpur Kalan, South Delhi, where a tree fell on a hut due to high winds. This resulted in the death of four people, including three young children, while one person sustained injuries.

How the Incident Occurred?

At 5:26 AM, police received information about a collapsed hut in Kharkhari Nahar village, near Jafarpur Kalan. Upon arrival, police and fire brigade personnel discovered that a neem tree had fallen onto a tubewell room in a field. The impact caused the complete collapse of the structure.

Jyoti (26), her three young children, and her husband Ajay were sleeping inside the room. After removing the debris, all were taken to the nearby RTR Hospital in Jafarpur Kalan, where doctors declared Jyoti and her three children dead. Ajay sustained minor injuries.

Major Incident in Delhi's Chhattarpur

Simultaneously, in Delhi's Chhattarpur area, the roof of a house collapsed. Four people were trapped under the debris and were rescued after considerable effort. Their condition is reported to be stable. This incident was also attributed to b winds and heavy rain.

House Fire Caused by Lightning Strike

A house in the Sabzi Mandi area of North Delhi caught fire after being struck by lightning. However, the fire brigade arrived promptly and brought the fire under control. No casualties were reported.

Over 100 Flights Affected at Delhi Airport

The severe storm also impacted air travel. More than 100 flights arriving and departing from Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) were delayed or canceled. This caused significant inconvenience to passengers, with many stranded at the airport for hours.

Weather Department Issues Alert for Delhi

The meteorological department had previously issued an alert for b winds and rain in Delhi and the NCR region. The forecast predicts continued inclement weather for the next 24 hours. People are advised to stay indoors and avoid trees and old structures.
