Six Killed and 70 Injured in Goa Temple Stampede

Goa Stampede: A stampede during a temple festival in Shirgaon village, Goa, resulted in six deaths and over 70 injuries. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ordered a magisterial inquiry and transferred several officials.

How Did the Accident Happen?

The stampede occurred on Sunday morning during the annual Jatra at a Devi temple in Shirgaon village. Thousands of devotees congregated in narrow lanes, causing the crowd to become unbalanced and resulting in the tragic incident. Six devotees died in the stampede, and over 70 were injured, some critically. Injured individuals received immediate hospital treatment.

CM Pramod Sawant Orders Inquiry

Following the incident, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced a thorough investigation. He tweeted, "I order a magisterial inquiry into the incident at the Shirgaon Jatra. A high-level meeting will soon review the situation and ensure appropriate action." The Chief Minister also stated he would personally oversee the matter and ensure strict action against those responsible.

Health Ministry's Swift Response

Following the incident, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane immediately formed a medical team stationed 24/7 at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to treat the injured. A team of senior doctors was assembled to manage the five critically injured devotees.

The Health Minister also stated, "A green corridor was created immediately after the incident to swiftly transfer the injured to the trauma ICU. All patients are receiving the best possible medical care."

Official Transfers

The administration responded swiftly, immediately transferring several officials. North Goa Collector Sneha Gitte, SP Akshat Kaushal, DSP Jivba Dalvi, and Bicholim Police Inspector were transferred. This action indicates the government's seriousness in addressing the incident and taking b action against those responsible.

Who Were Those Affected?

Authorities reported that the stampede occurred as devotees congregated at the Shirgaon temple. Thousands gathered in a narrow passage, exacerbating the situation. Most of the deceased were crushed due to the traffic congestion and dense crowd.

Many of the injured remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment at GMCH. The administration has pledged all possible assistance to the victims, including financial aid from the government for the injured.
