UP News: A shocking incident occurred in the Beta-2 police station area of Greater Noida, where a young man was severely injured when a western toilet seat exploded. The incident happened around 3 pm on Saturday. The young man flushed the toilet after using it, after which the toilet seat exploded with a loud bang.
The explosion also caused a fire, burning the young man's face, hands, legs, and private parts. Hearing his screams, his family members rushed to the scene and managed to pull him out of the fire. He was subsequently admitted to Jims Hospital.
Suspicion of Methane Gas Explosion
The young man's family suspects a methane gas explosion caused the accident. They claim that an AC exhaust is installed in the shaft between the toilet and kitchen, and there is also a green belt nearby. They believe that gas accumulated in the sewer pipeline, leading to the incident.
However, the police have not confirmed this information and are conducting a thorough investigation. Greater Noida Authority officials are also investigating the incident to determine the cause of the explosion.
Problems with the Sewer System
Harendra Bhati of ACT (Active Citizen Team) says that Greater Noida's sewer system is ineffective. Previously, vent pipes were installed in toilets to allow methane gas from the sewer to escape harmlessly into the atmosphere. But now, methane gas remains trapped inside the pipes, potentially causing such explosions. Furthermore, local residents allege that a sewer line near the P-3 roundabout has been broken for the past year and a half, and authorities have not repaired it, worsening the situation.
Authority's Response
Greater Noida Authority's CEO, Shreelakshmi VS, stated that this incident is unprecedented and the authority will investigate. The investigation will determine the cause of the explosion and how to prevent such incidents in the future.
Expert Opinion
Several gases, such as methane and hydrogen sulfide, are produced in sewers during the anoxic decomposition process. These gases can cause explosions, as seen in this incident. According to Dr. Vishwas Tripathi, the General Secretary of Gautam Buddha University, sewer gases can cause such blasts.
Safe Use of Western Toilets
- Ensure the sewer pipe is not clogged – Make sure sewer pipes are clean and unobstructed.
- Proper flushing mechanism – Check the proper functioning of the flush system.
- No leakage – There should be no leaks or seepage in the pipes.
