In a significant alteration to Karnataka's political and administrative map, the state government has officially changed the name of Ramanagara district. It will now be known as Bengaluru South.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government issued a notification officially renaming Ramanagara district to "Bengaluru South." This district is the home constituency of Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress president, D.K. Shivakumar, who proposed the name change, which the government subsequently approved. Located approximately 50 kilometers from Bengaluru, the district encompasses major taluks like Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli.

A Politically Significant Decision

Ramanagara district, now Bengaluru South, is the home district of the Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress president, D.K. Shivakumar. He is the MLA from the Kanakapura Assembly constituency within the district and holds significant political influence in the area. It is believed that Shivakumar had advocated for this name change for a considerable period, and this decision is a result of his efforts.

Within 24 hours of the state cabinet approving the proposal, the government issued the notification. The name change was notified under Section 4(4A) of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964.

Proximity to Bengaluru Underpins the Change

Ramanagara, already situated approximately 50 kilometers from Bengaluru, will now officially reflect its proximity to the metropolis under its new name, 'Bengaluru South.' This renaming is expected to enhance the district's urban identity and potentially accelerate its future development.

The district will retain the same four major taluks: Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli. Ramanagara town will remain the district headquarters. However, the name change will necessitate alterations in local administration, documentation processes, and identification.

Mixed Local Reactions

While D.K. Shivakumar's supporters and some Congress workers have welcomed the move, some local citizens and opposition parties have termed it a political manoeuvre. Some believe that the historically and culturally significant name 'Ramanagara' was more suitable, and that 'Bengaluru South' might detract from the district's inherent identity.

However, Shivakumar defended the decision, stating that it is not merely a name change but a crucial step towards the district's progress. He believes it will create more opportunities for investment and urban development.
