Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah made a controversial remark about Colonel Sofia Qureshi. Mayawati demanded action. The High Court ordered the filing of an FIR. The case is now in the Supreme Court.
UP News: Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah made a controversial remark about Colonel Sofia Qureshi, a Muslim woman officer in the Indian Army, sparking outrage nationwide. His statement has drawn widespread criticism. The Madhya Pradesh High Court, taking a b stance, ordered the filing of an FIR (First Information Report) against him. The case has now reached the Supreme Court, where Shah has sought relief.
Mayawati Demands Action
Mayawati, the national president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, directly attacked the BJP over the issue. Mayawati stated that while the FIR against Vijay Shah is a correct step, the public awaits concrete action from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Mayawati wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter):
"The High Court's strict action against the minister who made an indecent remark against the Muslim woman Colonel, a heroine of Operation Sindur, the army's operation against terrorists in Pakistan after the Pehalgam killings, is correct, but now the public is waiting for the BJP's action."
Mayawati Advises Law and Order Improvement
Mayawati also stated that governments should take action against those spreading communalism, casteism, hatred, and violence without discrimination. She warned that if such tendencies are not controlled, the nation's development will continue to be affected. She emphasized that before the courts, it is the responsibility of governments to curb crime according to the constitution and strengthen law and order.
High Court Raises Questions on FIR Drafting
The Madhya Pradesh High Court expressed displeasure over the FIR filed against Vijay Shah. The court stated that the police did not properly mention the minister's alleged actions in the way the FIR was drafted. The High Court warned that if this FIR were challenged in court, it could easily be dismissed.
The Advocate General informed the court that the FIR had been registered as per the High Court's order, but the court objected to the language of the FIR and the facts recorded within it.
Vijay Shah Approaches Supreme Court
Following the registration of the FIR, Vijay Shah filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking its quashing. The Supreme Court has not yet given a final verdict, but CJI Bhushan Gavai reprimanded Shah, stating, "You are a minister, but that doesn't mean you can say anything while holding a constitutional position."
