Monsoon Arrives 12 Days Early in Mumbai; Heavy Rainfall Causes Flooding; BMC Evacuates 96 Weak Buildings; IMD Issues Yellow Alert.

Mumbai: Mumbai experienced the onset of the monsoon season 12 days ahead of schedule this year. This has led to heavy rainfall across the city. Torrential downpours within hours inundated several areas, causing widespread waterlogging and disrupting daily life. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and surrounding districts, indicating the possibility of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days. Warnings have also been issued for coastal districts like Thane and Palghar. The IMD forecasts b winds and lightning alongside the rainfall.

Waterlogging and Traffic Problems in Mumbai

The onset of rain has once again highlighted Mumbai's persistent waterlogging problem. Waterlogged roads have caused significant traffic congestion in several areas. Vehicles moved slowly in areas such as Andheri, Sion, Dadar, Kurla, Malad, and Bandra. Local train services have also been affected, with water on railway tracks slowing down many trains. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed pumping machines to affected areas. Teams are continuously working on cleaning drains and maintaining the drainage system.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and other coastal districts of Maharashtra, indicating the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall. The IMD has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and follow official instructions. The possibility of b sea winds and lightning strikes during heavy rainfall persists. Local authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant.

BMC Preparedness; Evacuation from Weak Buildings

The BMC and MHADA have jointly identified and declared 96 buildings as structurally unsound. Approximately 3100 residents from these buildings have been instructed to relocate to safer locations. BMC officials are continuously monitoring rain-affected areas. A 24-hour control room is operational, and helpline numbers have been released to assist citizens in emergencies. The BMC has strengthened its efforts in drain cleaning, pumping station repairs, and traffic control to manage waterlogging issues.

Lightning Risk; Administration's Appeal

The risk of lightning strikes is particularly high in coastal areas, with b sea winds persisting. Authorities have appealed to fishermen and coastal residents to exercise caution. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea. To avoid lightning strikes, citizens are advised to stay indoors, limit mobile phone use, and avoid open areas.
