Dispute Over Venue Ahead of Rahul Gandhi's Darbhanga Visit
Darbhanga (Bihar): A dispute has arisen over the venue for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's upcoming visit to Darbhanga. Congress workers and the district administration are at loggerheads, creating a tense atmosphere. Gandhi's "Shiksha Nyay Samvad" program is scheduled for Darbhanga, but disagreements over the location have led to a standoff.
Clash Over Venue
Congress workers want the program to be held at the Ambedkar Hostel in Madarpur, under Laheriasarai police station. They argue that the hostel students do not wish to travel to the Town Hall. However, the administration has granted permission for the event at the Town Hall, located within the Municipal Corporation office. Preparations were underway at the Town Hall late Wednesday night, but on Thursday morning, workers reiterated their demand for the hostel venue.
Congress Warns, Event to Proceed as Planned
Congress workers have warned that if the administration interferes, Rahul Gandhi will meet the students on the streets. Congress leader and Deputy Mayor Nazia Hassan stated, "This is not a political event. Rahul Gandhi is coming solely to interact with students. The district administration is trying to sabotage it."
Administration Cites Security Concerns
Darbhanga District Magistrate Rajiv Roshan stated that for security reasons, the Ambedkar Hostel is unsuitable for such an event. He explained that former state Congress president Madan Mohan Jha had requested permission for the Town Hall, which was granted, and preparations are complete.
The DM clarified that such political or interactive programs are not conducted in hostels anywhere in the country due to the potential negative impact on students. He warned of administrative action against anyone violating the permission granted.
Section 144 Imposed, Police Deployment
Considering the situation, the district administration has imposed Section 144 in the Ambedkar Hostel area. Circle Inspector Lallan Kumar reported that a large police contingent has been deployed to prevent any untoward incident. There are concerns about the possibility of a lathi charge, though the administration has not officially confirmed this.
Potential Detention of Rahul Gandhi
Sources suggest that if Congress workers defy the administration's order and attempt to hold the event at the hostel, Rahul Gandhi may be detained at Darbhanga airport. The administration is on high alert and prepared to take action as per regulations.
