Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, Ziaur Rahman Bark, is facing mounting legal troubles. Already under investigation for allegedly inciting riots in Sambhal, he has now been slapped with a hefty fine of ₹1.91 crore by the electricity department.

Sambhal: The difficulties for Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Bark are continuously increasing. While an investigation is underway regarding his alleged involvement in inciting riots, the electricity department has imposed a significant fine of ₹1.91 crore. This penalty stems from alleged electricity theft at his residence.

The final notice from the electricity department clearly states that he has only two options: pay the fine or seek legal recourse. This case has created a stir in the political circles of Sambhal and beyond.

How was the theft discovered?

The incident dates back to December 2023, when the electricity department team conducted a surprise inspection at the residence of MP Ziaur Rahman Bark. During the inspection, the team found two meters, one in the name of MP Ziaur Rahman Bark and the other in the name of his grandfather and former MP, Dr. Shafiqueur Rahman Bark. Surprisingly, both meters showed zero consumption, despite significant electricity usage at the residence. Based on this, the department conducted a thorough investigation and found evidence of large-scale electricity theft.

How was the fine calculated?

After a technical and economic investigation, the electricity department determined that a total of ₹1.91 crore worth of electricity had been illegally consumed. Based on this, the fine was imposed on the MP. To date, neither the fine has been paid nor has any legal objection been raised. According to Sambhal's Executive Engineer, Naveen Gautam, a previous notice was sent, but in the absence of a response, a final notice has now been issued. If payment is still not received, a recovery certificate (RC) will be issued.

This matter has taken on a political dimension. MP Ziaur Rahman Bark has termed it a conspiracy by the administration. He alleges that the local administration is trapping him under political pressure and conspiring to defame him. The MP claims he is being unjustly implicated and that the entire action is politically motivated. He says he is considering legal options and will soon appeal to the court. However, no official response has yet been sent to the electricity department.

Consequences of non-payment?

If the MP fails to pay the fine or challenge it in court, the electricity department will initiate recovery proceedings under the law. This could include strict actions such as seizing bank accounts, attaching property, and disconnecting electricity supply. This is not the first time Ziaur Rahman Bark has been embroiled in controversy. Previously, he has faced allegations of communal rhetoric and spreading communal tension in Sambhal. Investigations into these matters are currently underway.
