Uttar Pradesh's Director General of Police (DGP), Prashant Kumar, is set to retire at the end of this month. This has sparked considerable speculation within administrative circles regarding his successor.
UP Police DGP: A significant change is imminent within the Uttar Pradesh Police force, as the current DGP, Prashant Kumar, is retiring on May 31st. His retirement has fueled intense conjecture surrounding the appointment of the new DGP in India's most populous state. All eyes are on who will lead this large and challenging department.
While the Home Department has yet to offer any official indication, sources suggest several senior IPS officers are in contention. This appointment is not only administratively crucial but will also significantly shape the state's law and order situation and crime control strategies in the coming years.
Retirement of Three DGP-Rank Officers Reshapes the Equation
Along with Prashant Kumar, DGP Jails, P.V. Ramasastry, and DGP Telecom, Sanjay M. Tarde, are also retiring at the end of May. This will alter the seniority list of the UP cadre IPS officers and influence the selection process for the new DGP. Daljeet Singh Chaudhari is considered a b contender for the new DGP position.
Currently a DGP-rank officer in the Border Security Force (BSF), Daljeet Singh is a senior IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. He possesses extensive experience in both state police and central forces. His administrative acumen and calm demeanor make him a balanced choice.
Other Prominent Names: Rajiv Krishna and Atul Sharma
Another important name in the running is Rajiv Krishna, currently the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board and Director of Vigilance. He has approximately four years of service remaining, making him a stable and long-term option. Atul Sharma is another senior IPS officer who has held several key positions.
Could Tilottama Verma Become the First Female DGP?
Significant speculation centers on the possibility of Uttar Pradesh appointing its first female DGP. This possibility is strengthened by DGP Training, Tilottama Verma, who holds a prominent position in the seniority list and has over six months of service remaining. Her extensive experience with the CBI and b background in training institutions make her a qualified candidate. Her selection would be a historic decision for the state police.
Ashish Gupta's Name Also in Discussion
Tilottama Verma's husband, Ashish Gupta, the most senior IPS officer in the UP cadre, recently applied for Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). While he hasn't yet retired, his name remains a topic of discussion. The situation could change if the state government attempts to retain him and considers him for the appointment.
Currently, the UP Home Department has not issued any official statement, but it's clear the government is proceeding cautiously. The DGP's appointment is not only linked to law and order but will also shape the police structure for years to come. Therefore, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's decision on who will receive this responsibility is keenly awaited.
