A recent detailed post by Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked controversy. In the post, Yadav launched a scathing attack on the government's formation of temple trusts, alleging that the BJP government is "seizing" control of major temples.
What did Akhilesh Yadav say?
Following the Uttar Pradesh government's recent formation of a trust and issuance of an ordinance regarding the famous Banke Bihari Temple in Mathura, protests have begun. On social media, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav wrote, "Protect temples from the corruption of government administration! The BJP and its allies are ending traditional systems under the guise of controlling large temples."
He stated that individuals who have overseen the temples for years with devotion and service are being removed. He termed this an attack on faith and an attempt to weigh religion on a scale of profit and loss. He also asserted that religion is for the betterment of society, not for profit, and accused the government of corruption in temple offerings and prasad (holy offerings).
Keshav Maurya's Counterattack
Responding to the SP president's accusations, Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya said that Akhilesh Yadav has no moral authority to speak on temple-related issues. He questioned Yadav's credibility, referencing the SP's past actions. Maurya stated that the government is working towards the preservation, development, and transparency of temples and pilgrimage sites. He added that forming a trust is a step towards organized temple management and improved devotee facilities, not an attempt to eliminate tradition.
According to political analysts, the issue of temple trusts is sensitive. While the government claims it will improve transparency in temple management, opposition parties see it as an attack on traditional systems. Large temples in North India have long faced accusations regarding offerings and land ownership.

Local residents and temple priests have already voiced opposition to the formation of the Banke Bihari Temple trust.
