China's Gaze on Lalmonirhat Airbase Raises Concerns for India's Security
India vs China: China is once again increasing its maneuvering in South Asia. Specifically, it has its sights set on the Lalmonirhat airbase in Bangladesh, located near India's highly sensitive "Chicken's Neck" region. This airbase, built during World War II, is situated close to the Siliguri Corridor. The Chicken's Neck, a mere 20-kilometer-wide strip of land connecting India to its northeastern states, is considered vital for India's security.
China's actions are naturally causing concern in India, as increased Chinese influence in this area could pose a significant strategic threat.
The Significance of Lalmonirhat Airbase
The Lalmonirhat airbase holds particular strategic importance. Built during World War II, it is located in northern Bangladesh. China showed interest in this airbase in 2018, causing alarm in India. At that time, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina explicitly opposed China's proposal.
The airbase's location is very close to the Siliguri Corridor, or Chicken's Neck, a narrow strip of land connecting India to its northeastern states, only 20 kilometers wide. Any threat to this route could be devastating to the security of northeastern India.
China's Strategic Intentions and India's Concerns
China's aim might be to use this airbase, via Bangladesh, to undermine India's security apparatus. China's consistently strengthening relationship with Bangladesh is a source of worry for India.
Although Sheikh Hasina announced the construction of an aviation university in Bangladesh in 2019, she rejected a Chinese loan offer. Work on the university slowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, China has now intensified its efforts to strengthen its ties with Bangladesh.
Political Changes in Bangladesh and China's Growing Influence
Recently, a new interim government has been formed in Bangladesh, with Mohammad Yunus as its chief advisor. Following his appointment, Yunus immediately visited China, holding discussions on strengthening bilateral relations. This move has raised questions in India about whether Bangladesh is falling under China's influence.
This poses a significant threat to India, as closer ties between Bangladesh and China could allow China to encroach upon India's strategic interests. Specifically, Chinese involvement in sensitive areas like the Siliguri Corridor could weaken India's security.
Challenges for India
The geography of the Chicken's Neck is extremely vulnerable for India. It is the lifeline connecting mainland India to its northeastern states. If China utilizes the Lalmonirhat airbase in Bangladesh, India could suffer both militarily and economically.
Furthermore, China's growing presence challenges India's dominance in South Asia. India needs to strengthen both its diplomatic and military strategies to counter China's increasing actions.
