Boycott Turkey: Following Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jamia Millia Islamia has suspended all Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Turkish government-affiliated educational institutions. In a similar move, Kanpur University has also cancelled its agreement with Istanbul University.
Education: Amidst recent India-Turkey tensions, prominent Indian educational institutions—Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Kanpur University—have taken the significant step of terminating their ongoing agreements with Turkish educational institutions. This action is framed in terms of patriotism and national security.
Jamia Millia Islamia Suspends MoUs
Jamia Millia Islamia has announced the indefinite suspension of all Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with educational institutions linked to the Turkish government. Professor Saima Saeed, Jamia's chief public relations officer, stated, "We have halted all collaborations with Turkish educational institutions until further notice. Jamia stands firmly with the government and the nation."
This decision comes amidst political and diplomatic tensions between India and Turkey, highlighting the prioritization of national sovereignty and interests by educational institutions.
Kanpur University Terminates Agreement with Turkey
Kanpur University in Uttar Pradesh has also cancelled its MoU with Istanbul University. The university administration clarified its unwavering commitment to national security and interests. This decision sends a clear message that no compromise or relationship against national interests will be tolerated, whether in education or any other field.
JNU's Proactive Step and Example of Patriotism
Jawaharlal Nehru University pioneered this initiative. JNU suspended its bilateral agreement with Turkey's Inonu University indefinitely. JNU's Vice-Chancellor, Shantikumar D. Pandit, stated, "JNU operates on Indian taxpayers' money, and it is our duty to make decisions in the nation's interest. Our message is clear: JNU stands firmly with the country and its armed forces."
She further added, "It is inappropriate for us to have any connection with those who support our enemy nations. Therefore, we have suspended all educational agreements with Turkey. Turkish language studies at JNU have also been discontinued." This move is seen as a symbol of national security and patriotism.
Delhi University Begins Review
Meanwhile, Delhi University has reportedly initiated a review of its international academic agreements. An official stated that all MoUs are under review, with a final decision to follow. This suggests that other major educational institutions in the country may also take similar steps.
This decision is not merely a response to diplomatic tensions; it also signifies the commitment of India's educational institutions to patriotism and national interests. India's youth and the academic community are clearly demonstrating their prioritization of national interests, even in international collaborations.
