India's automobile industry is poised to enter a new era from 2025, dubbed the 'Smartphone Age'. This transformation will see domestically manufactured cars incorporating advanced technologies such as 5G machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity, on-device generative AI (GenAI), and cloud connectivity. This shift represents a significant step towards providing consumers with enhanced features, quality, and overall experience.
5G and AI: A New Technological Revolution in Cars
From 2025, most passenger vehicles in India will incorporate advanced technologies like 5G M2M connectivity, on-device GenAI, and cloud connectivity. These technologies will enable cars to offer features such as real-time data processing, audio/video conferencing, OTT entertainment, music streaming, podcasts, online shopping, and vehicle maintenance and service.
Pricing and Availability
Cars equipped with these advanced technologies will primarily be available in the ₹20 lakh and above price range. However, reports suggest that these technologies may become available across various price segments in the coming years, making them accessible to a wider consumer base.
Major Manufacturers and Market Status
In India, 22 automobile manufacturers produce approximately 5 million passenger vehicles annually. Many of these manufacturers, including MG Motors, Kia Motors, and Tata Motors, are already leaders in the connected car segment. Companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek are playing major roles in the automotive chipset market, with their combined revenue already exceeding US$1.5 billion.
This technological transformation positions India not only as a domestic leader but also as a global frontrunner in automotive technology. For consumers, this change will bring enhanced experiences, improved safety features, and new entertainment possibilities.
