Northern India is currently experiencing a severe heatwave. Intense sunshine, heat waves, and humidity have increased distress for people in states like Delhi-NCR, Bihar, and Rajasthan. Temperatures remain consistently above normal, impacting daily life. Meanwhile, there is welcome news regarding the monsoon.
Monsoon Update: Amidst the intense heat in North India, hopes for relief have risen. The southwest monsoon, stagnant since the end of May, has finally gained momentum. After a delay of 13 days, it is now moving northward, increasing the likelihood of rain in several states, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, in the coming days.
For the past three days, temperatures have hovered around 45 degrees Celsius across North India, including Delhi-NCR. Heatwave conditions were recorded in many areas on Tuesday, and an orange alert has been issued for Wednesday. However, signs of a change in weather are expected from the evening of June 12th—light rain with b winds is anticipated.
Monsoon Reactivates
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and private agency Skymet Weather have confirmed that the monsoon, which had stalled after reaching Kerala on May 29th, is now receiving renewed energy from two cyclonic systems forming in the Bay of Bengal. The influence of these systems is accelerating the monsoon's westward and northward movement. According to G.P. Sharma, President of Skymet Weather, “A cyclonic circulation has formed in the west-central Bay of Bengal.”
This will initiate rainfall in South India, particularly coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Karnataka. A second system is expected to form around June 14th, which will further propel the monsoon through Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
North India Suffers Under Intense Heat
- Delhi recorded a temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
- The mercury crossed 47 degrees Celsius in Churu and Ganganagar, Rajasthan.
- The situation is extremely critical in Haryana, Punjab, and western Uttar Pradesh.
- The Meteorological Department has warned against expecting relief from the heat before Thursday. However, a significant change in weather is likely after June 13th.
Monsoon's Current Reach
Currently, the monsoon has reached only Mumbai and Sikkim-Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Normally, it reaches most parts of North India by June 10th, but this year, obstacles have caused a delay. Meteorologists say that as the Bay of Bengal systems become active, the monsoon will accelerate. According to Skymet, there is a b possibility that the monsoon will reach most states in North India within the next week.
