Pahalgam Attack: Following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22nd, India has begun taking b action against Pakistan. To strengthen its fight against terrorism, India plans to economically weaken Pakistan. In this vein, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masatsugu Asakawa, demanding a cessation of financial aid to Pakistan.
Why Aid to Pakistan?
Pakistan's economic situation is dire, necessitating substantial financial assistance. Consequently, Pakistan receives aid from several international organizations, including the ADB and IMF. This funding supports Pakistan's development projects, climate change mitigation efforts, and infrastructure development.
India's Opposition
India contends that Pakistan is using these funds to support terrorism, alleging that the Pakistani government provides shelter and support to terrorists. Therefore, India has demanded that the ADB halt financial aid to Pakistan. Furthermore, India has urged the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to reinstate Pakistan to the grey list to curb its support for terrorist activities.
The Need for Stronger Action Against Pakistan
India demands that aid provided to Pakistan be used responsibly and not to support terrorism. India has also questioned the $7 billion aid package provided to Pakistan by the IMF.
India's Security Preparedness
Following the Pahalgam attack, India has bolstered its security preparedness. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the army a free hand, and the Indian army has conducted blackout mock drills and fighter jet exercises along the border. Furthermore, India has increased its naval preparedness, sending a clear message to Pakistan of its commitment to national security.
