Twenty-three BJP MLAs in Manipur met to discuss government formation. Emphasis was placed on improving communication between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, appointing peace envoys, and disarmament.
Manipur: Manipur's political landscape may be witnessing a significant shift. On Friday, 23 BJP MLAs held a meeting at the residence of former minister Thongam Biswajit Singh in Imphal. The meeting extensively discussed the possibilities of forming a government and addressing the issues of restoring peace in the state. This meeting is considered a crucial step towards the state's political stability and development.
Key Issues Raised by BJP MLAs
The MLAs acknowledged the ongoing political stalemate and tension in the state and stressed the urgency of resolving it. They clarified their commitment to working for the benefit of the people of Manipur, prioritizing the state's interests above personal gains. BJP leader Thokchom Radheshyam had also stated that 44 MLAs were ready to form a government, although some MLAs are not yet included in this group.
Plan to End Communal Tension
The meeting also decided to establish a neutral communication platform to address the ongoing tension between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. A request was made to the Governor and the central government to appoint peace envoys or a panel of respected mediators to rebuild trust between the two communities.
Local communities, student organizations, religious groups, and civil society will also be involved in this communication process to ensure peace at the grassroots level.
Emphasis on Law and Order and Disarmament
To improve the security situation, the MLAs emphasized the need to make the disarmament campaign effective. The recovery of weapons in the state's hill and valley regions and the impartiality of security forces are essential. They requested both the central and state governments to strengthen and ensure the impartiality of law and order to enhance public safety and security.
Need for Communication with Media and Civil Society
Following the violence in Gwaltabi on May 20, the MLAs stated that the government should enhance communication with the media and civil society. They believe that dialogue is crucial for resolving the problems. The BJP MLAs assured their full cooperation in this process to bring stability to the state.
