The RSS opposes caste-based discrimination but believes that consultation and consensus with all stakeholders are necessary before implementing sub-categorization or a creamy layer in quotas for SCs and STs. The organization is working towards social harmony.
Caste Census: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has adopted a measured stance on the central government's decision to conduct a caste census. The RSS states that the caste census should not be used as a political tool. Expressing concerns, the organization emphasized the sensitive nature of this issue and the need to handle it in the context of social harmony.
The RSS's Stance on Caste Census
The RSS has always opposed caste-based discrimination and division, believing that any such division based on caste can exacerbate discrimination in society. However, according to the RSS, achieving consensus and consultation with all stakeholders is essential before implementing measures like sub-categorization and creamy layer provisions within quotas for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs).
An RSS spokesperson stated that a caste census should be solely for the welfare of backward communities requiring special attention. They said, "This data has been collected before, but its use should be limited to the welfare of these communities, not as an electoral or political tool."
Caste Census: Not a Political Tool
The RSS believes that the caste census should not be politicized. The organization, under its 'social harmony' initiative, has been working towards uniting Hindu society. Sunil Ambaker, the organization's chief spokesperson, stated last year in Kerala that caste-related issues are highly sensitive and should be handled with regard for national unity and integrity, not for electoral gains.
Ambaker clarified that the RSS has no objection to collecting caste data, but it should be solely for the benefit of communities needing special attention. He stated, "Caste data should be used only for development and welfare, not for politics."
RSS Support: Towards a New Direction
This statement from the RSS is now considered significant support, giving the Narendra Modi government the freedom to move forward in this direction without facing major opposition. With the caste census implemented at the grassroots level in Bihar and national-level support from the RSS, this process is now poised to reshape India's socio-economic and political policies.
