Of the 277 people on board, at least 19 were injured, with 4 reported to be in serious condition. A video of the incident, clearly showing the ship striking the bridge and subsequently falling away, is rapidly circulating on social media.

The Full Incident

The upper section of the Mexican Navy ship, clearly displaying the Mexican flag, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge. The accident occurred while the ship was traversing the East River in New York. After the collision, the ship drifted towards the riverbank, causing nearby onlookers to flee in panic.

The New York Fire Department confirmed that emergency personnel immediately responded to the scene upon receiving reports of the incident. The Mayor of New York also confirmed the event, stating that the injured had been transported to hospitals.

Mexican Navy Statement and Relief Efforts

The Mexican Navy issued a post on X (formerly Twitter) stating that their training ship ‘Cuauhtémoc’ was damaged in an accident involving the Brooklyn Bridge and that its voyage had been halted. The Navy stated they were working with local authorities to review the safety and support situation for personnel.

The Navy Secretary also stated their commitment to the safety of their personnel and maintaining transparency in the operation. They further clarified that the ‘Cuauhtémoc’ is a training vessel for the Mexican Naval School, training cadets during sea voyages.

Voyage and Future Plans

The ‘Cuauhtémoc’ departed from the port of Acapulco, Mexico, on April 6th of this year with 277 people on board. Its itinerary included stops at 22 ports in 15 countries. These locations included Kingston, Jamaica; Havana, Cuba; Cozumel, Mexico; and New York, USA. Further stops were planned in Iceland, France, and several ports in Scotland. The total voyage was planned for 254 days, with 170 days at sea and 84 days in port. Following the accident, Mexican and local American authorities are conducting a serious investigation into the incident.
