According to the Hindu Panchang, the Shravan Vrat will be observed on Monday, May 19th, 2025. This vrat is observed every month on the day of the Shravan Nakshatra and is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu. Associated with the Vaishnava tradition, this vrat is considered a symbol of dharma, devotion, and self-purification.
When is the Shravan Vrat?
The next Shravan Vrat this year falls on May 19th, 2025 (Monday).
- Shravan Nakshatra begins: May 18th, 2025, 6:52 PM
- Shravan Nakshatra ends: May 19th, 2025, 7:29 PM
What do devotees do on Shravan Vrat?
On the day of Shravan Vrat, devotees observe a fast from sunrise to sunrise the next day. This fast is similar to the Ekadashi fast, with a sankalp (resolution) taken, often with only water or fruits allowed. Elderly or unwell individuals may observe a partial fast. Meat, alcohol, and tamasic food are prohibited. Early morning bathing is followed by the worship of Lord Vishnu, and the recitation of Panchasuktam or Vishnu Sahasranamam with the lighting of a lamp. Many devotees also observe a vow of silence for the day, considered a means of meditation and self-reflection.
Before breaking the fast the next day, it is essential to offer naivedya (food offering) to God. Devotees observing a strict fast often consume only liquid food the following morning.
Religious Significance of Shravan Vrat
Religious texts mention that the Shravan Nakshatra is considered the nakshatra of Lord Venkateshwara. Especially at pilgrimage sites like Tirumala Tirupati and Oppiliappan Temple, deepdan (lighting lamps) and special rituals are performed on this day. The Shravan Vrat is not only considered auspicious but also said to lead an individual towards moksha (liberation). This vrat signifies the beginning of Chaturmas, a period of restraint, fasting, and religious observance, along with Vishnu bhakti.
Importance of Shravan Maas and the Vrat
In the traditional Hindu Panchang, the Shravan Maas is considered extremely sacred. This month is an auspicious time for worshipping both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. It is believed that the puja and vrat sadhana performed during this month bring happiness, prosperity, and peace to life. The glory of Shravan Vrat is described extensively in several Puranas, including the Vishnu Purana. It is said to be a step towards attaining Vaikuntha (the abode of Vishnu) in life.
