Following the Pulwama Attack, India has issued an order to immediately halt all direct and indirect imports from Pakistan.
India-Pak War: India has taken another b step against Pakistan. Following the terrorist attack in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, the central government has imposed an immediate ban on all direct and indirect imports from Pakistan. According to a notice issued by the Ministry of Commerce on May 2, 2025, this decision has been taken by adding a new provision to the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023.
Rising Tensions After the Pulwama Attack
On April 22, Indian security forces were targeted in a terrorist attack in the Beasaran Valley, Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack has caused widespread anger across the country and is believed to be Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Since then, the Indian government has been taking increasingly stringent measures against Pakistan.
Changes in the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP)
The Ministry of Commerce issued an official notice on May 2, amending the Foreign Trade Policy 2023. The notice clearly states a complete ban on the import of all goods from Pakistan. Whether these goods come directly from Pakistan or via another country—they will no longer be allowed into India.
Legal Basis for the Ban
This ban is justified on grounds of national security and public interest. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) clarified that this decision was taken keeping in mind India's security, internal stability, and the sentiments of its citizens. The government states that this is a temporary but necessary measure.
Exceptions and Permits
However, the government has also clarified that in certain exceptional cases, if absolutely necessary, import permits may be granted—but this will require government approval. Any import from Pakistan without permission will now be considered illegal.
Previous Stringent Measures
This is not the first step taken against Pakistan. Previously, India has:
- Abrogated the Indus Waters Treaty
- Ordered all Pakistani citizens to leave India
- Closed Indian airspace to Pakistani airlines
