New Delhi: The Indian Navy is about to receive a warship of immense historical and cultural significance, one that will showcase India's rich maritime legacy and traditional shipbuilding prowess to the world. This vessel is not only technologically unique but also proudly carries forward a heritage deeply rooted in Indian culture and history.
This wooden ship is a recreation of 5th-century Indian naval power. Its inspiration comes from an ancient painting on the walls of the Ajanta caves in Maharashtra, depicting a uniquely shaped vessel. This painting served as the blueprint for the ship's entire structure.
A Fusion of Traditional Techniques and Modern Testing
This unique warship was built entirely using traditional Indian techniques. Every nail, every joint, and every piece of wood was handcrafted. The construction was undertaken by a team of experienced traditional artisans from Kerala, led by renowned shipbuilder Babu Shankaran. They breathed life into this project with their experience and craftsmanship.
The Indian Navy not only participated in this project but also provided continuous technical oversight and scrutiny. Its design and structural integrity were tested by the Naval Engineering Department of IIT Madras to ensure the ship's seaworthiness.
Naming Ceremony and Naval Induction
A grand ceremony is being held at the Naval Base in Karwar, where Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat will formally name the historic vessel and induct it into the Indian Navy. This event is being seen as a symbol of India's cultural heritage and maritime glory.
This ship is not merely for display; it will undertake actual sea voyages. Its first mission will be based on historic maritime trade routes, starting from India's west coast. The first proposed voyage is from the coast of Gujarat to Oman, a route frequently used by Indian traders in ancient times. This voyage aims to revive these ancient maritime connections.
Showcasing India's Cultural Power on the International Stage
According to Navy spokesperson Captain Vivek Madhwal, this ship is distinct from modern vessels. It lacks a modern engine and automated systems. Its strength lies in its traditional structure: square sails, hand-operated oars, and a robust wooden hull. This vessel not only showcases India's technological diversity but also serves as a vibrant example of India's maritime prosperity to the world.
This project involved the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Defence, and Goa-based MSMEs, Hodi Innovation. This collaboration demonstrates that when defence, culture, and innovation work together, India creates a new global identity.
