Punjab Election: Balkaur Singh, father of the Punjabi singer and former candidate Sidhu Moosewala, has announced his intention to contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. He made this announcement during a media interaction following a 'Save Constitution Rally' organized by the District Congress. Balkaur Singh stated that he will enter the electoral fray to seek justice for his son, citing the severely deteriorated law and order situation in Punjab.
Balkaur Singh's Decision to Contest: A Father's Voice
Balkaur Singh maintains that his son, Sidhu Moosewala, has not received justice. He clarified that the state's law and order situation has deteriorated to such an extent that he is compelled to enter politics to pursue justice against his son's killers. He stated, “The accused in my son's murder are still not in jail. Murders occur in broad daylight in Punjab, and such an environment is dangerous for the Constitution. Therefore, I must fight within the public sphere.”
This is not the first time Balkaur Singh has taken political action following his son's murder, but this time he explicitly stated his intention to contest from the Mansa Assembly seat – the same constituency where Sidhu Moosewala contested in 2022.
Questioning Punjab's Law and Order
Balkaur Singh leveled serious accusations against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, claiming that law and order in Punjab has completely collapsed. He stated, "Numerous major incidents have occurred in Punjab under the AAP government, jeopardizing public safety. My son was also a victim of an open murder, and those responsible are yet to be apprehended."
He further asserted that the deteriorating law and order situation threatens the security of the Constitution, necessitating the people of the state to stand up for their rights and the Constitution.
Sidhu Moosewala's Political Journey
Sidhu Moosewala contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections from the Mansa seat on a Congress party ticket, during the tenure of Navjot Singh Sidhu as Punjab Congress President. However, Moosewala lost to the Aam Aadmi Party's candidate, Vijay Singla.
Sidhu Moosewala's popularity extended beyond his status as a Punjabi singer; he also had a significant presence in politics. He enjoyed considerable fan following among the youth, making him a popular figure.
Sidhu Moosewala's Murder in 2022
On May 29, 2022, Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead by unknown assailants in Jawaharke village, Mansa district. Police identified the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as prime suspects. This gang claimed responsibility for the murder on social media, though later retracted the claim.
Lawrence Bishnoi, considered the mastermind behind the murder, was in police custody by June 2022. Sidhu Moosewala's murder sent shockwaves through Punjab and the entire country.
