During the 61st match of IPL 2025, a heated on-field argument erupted between Lucknow Super Giants bowler Digvesh Rathi and Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman Abhishek Sharma.
Sports News: The 61st match of IPL 2025 witnessed not only a battle of bat and ball but also a clash of tempers. A heated exchange occurred between LSG's fast bowler Digvesh Singh Rathi and SRH's opening batsman Abhishek Sharma. This incident unfolded after Rathi dismissed Sharma and celebrated with his signature 'notebook celebration,' which angered the batsman.
On-Field Confrontation: How Did the Altercation Begin?
At the Ekana Stadium, Lucknow bowler Digvesh Rathi dismissed Abhishek Sharma early in the innings with a superb delivery. However, his celebration was deemed excessive and aggressive. His characteristic celebration, involving a mock notebook entry, provoked a b reaction from Sharma. A verbal exchange ensued between the two players, escalating the situation and requiring the umpires to intervene.
Strict BCCI Action: Ban and Fine for Rathi
The on-field aggression resulted in consequences for both players. Following an investigation by the IPL Governing Council and the match referee, the BCCI imposed a 50% match fee fine and a one-match ban on Digvesh Rathi for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. This ban was implemented because this was Rathi's third serious offense this season related to his celebrations. He had previously been reprimanded twice:
- April 1st: Received a fine and a demerit point for his 'notebook celebration' during a match against Punjab Kings.
- April 4th: Incurred a 50% fine and two additional demerit points for repeating the same celebration against Mumbai Indians.
- SRH Match: Two more demerit points were added following the altercation with Abhishek Sharma.
This brought Rathi's total demerit points to five. According to IPL rules, exceeding four demerit points within 36 months results in a one-match ban. Consequently, Rathi will miss the crucial match against Gujarat Titans on May 22nd.
Abhishek Sharma Also Sanctioned
Although Rathi initiated the confrontation, Abhishek Sharma's response was also deemed a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct. The BCCI fined him 25% of his match fee and awarded him one demerit point. Since this was his first Level 1 offense, he avoided a ban but received a warning.
