Delhi-NCR to Receive Much-Needed Relief from Scorching Heatwave

The intense heatwave that has gripped Delhi-NCR and the entire northern India for several days is finally expected to provide some much-needed relief. The India Meteorological Department (IMD)'s latest report indicates a shift towards improved weather conditions for those suffering from the scorching heat.

Weather Update: Relief is in sight for those battling the intense heat, heatwave, and humidity that have plagued northern India for days. According to the IMD's latest report, Delhi-NCR and surrounding states are expected to see a drop in temperature and the onset of monsoon rains. The monsoon has regained momentum across the country and is expected to actively reach many regions before June 20th.

Delhi-NCR Heads Towards Relief from Scorching Heat

Temperatures in the national capital, Delhi, had reached as high as 45 degrees Celsius, significantly impacting daily life. However, the IMD forecasts light to moderate rain or showers with thunderstorms from June 14th to 20th. Additionally, rapid weather changes are expected, accompanied by b winds and thunderstorms.

Monsoon Status: Progress, Location, and Forecast

In 2025, the southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24th, earlier than usual and the earliest arrival since 2009. It then rapidly moved north, reaching Mumbai and Northeast India by May 29th. However, its progress temporarily stalled. Now reactivated, it is expected to reach many parts of central and eastern India by June 18th.

Monsoon Progress Across India

  • Delhi: Expected around June 22-23, 2025 (normal arrival is around June 30th).
  • Bihar: Good rainfall expected after June 18th.
  • Uttar Pradesh: Light to moderate rainfall expected from June 15th to 20th.
  • Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh: Warning of warm nights, rain with thunderstorms from June 17th.
  • Rajasthan: Dust storms expected in western parts from June 15th to 18th.
  • Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh: Rain with b winds and thunderstorms expected by June 16th.
  • Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh: Monsoon showers and moderate rain between June 14th and 17th.
  • Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand: Rain and lightning expected from June 15th to 19th.

The IMD predicts no significant temperature change in northwest and central India over the next 24 hours, but a 2-5 degree Celsius drop is possible within five days.

Factors Influencing the Monsoon

India's monsoon patterns are complex, influenced by global, regional, and local factors. This year, low-pressure systems active in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal have energized the monsoon. Furthermore, western winds and a trough system in the troposphere oriented east-west could accelerate the monsoon's northward advance into northwest India between June 19th and 25th.

Meteorologists suggest that the monsoon will arrive relatively early in Delhi and surrounding areas this year, but this does not necessarily imply above-average rainfall. There is no direct correlation between the onset of the monsoon and total rainfall.
