A resurgence of coronavirus cases has been reported in Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh. Eight new positive cases emerged in the past 24 hours. These include a resident doctor, a medical student, and a senior citizen suffering from a heart ailment, all from King George's Medical University (KGMU).
Uttar Pradesh: The coronavirus has once again made its presence felt in Lucknow. Eight new COVID-19 infections were confirmed in the city within the last 24 hours, raising concerns within the health department. The positive test results of a resident doctor and a medical student at KGMU have prompted increased vigilance in medical institutions.
One of the infected patients is an elderly individual with a severe heart condition who was already hospitalized. Contact tracing and testing of individuals who came into contact with these patients have commenced.
Current Infection Status
According to the latest data from the health department, a total of eight new COVID-19 infections were detected in Lucknow by Wednesday. Three cases are linked to KGMU, two to a private lab technician and a family member, and three originated from different areas. All patients have been placed in home isolation, and their condition is reported to be stable.
KGMU administration reported that the resident doctor experienced mild fever and a sore throat, prompting them to undergo testing, which returned positive. The medical student was also associated with the same department, and both currently have a local travel history.
Elderly Patient's Report Raises Concerns
A 72-year-old patient, admitted to KGMU's cardiology department for a heart blockage, also tested positive for COVID-19. They exhibited mild coughing and breathing difficulties. Doctors report that their treatment is ongoing, and oxygen levels are under control. Given the patient's condition, they are under close observation.
Following the positive test results, KGMU administration and the health department immediately initiated active contact tracing. Thirty-eight individuals identified as being in direct contact with the patients are currently undergoing testing. A sanitation drive has been undertaken within the hospital premises, and the ward where the infected patients were admitted has been temporarily closed.
Expert Opinion
Dr. R.K. Verma (Virologist, KGMU) stated that while the numbers are currently small, they indicate the virus hasn't disappeared. Changing weather patterns, crowding, and relaxed adherence to preventive measures could lead to a resurgence. The public is urged to continue practicing preventive measures such as mask-wearing, handwashing, and social distancing. The health department has alerted all major hospitals in the city.
Furthermore, the number of RT-PCR tests is being increased. KGMU and other medical institutions have been instructed to strictly adhere to COVID protocols. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as cold, cough, fever, or breathing difficulties are urged to get tested immediately and self-isolate.
