Last April, the government collected ₹2.10 lakh crore in taxes; this year, the figure has reached ₹2.37 lakh crore, reflecting the strengthening economy.

Refunds and Net Collection

Total refunds amounted to ₹27,341 crore this time, a 48.3% increase compared to ₹18,434 crore last year. After refunds, the net GST collection in April 2025 was recorded at ₹2,09,376 crore.

This signifies that the government's total tax collection is improving year on year, and this growth indicates the country's economic recovery.

What is included in Tax Collection?

The government's tax collection includes CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax), SGST (State Goods and Services Tax), IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax), and CESS (Special Taxes). After collecting these taxes, the government also provides refunds to any companies or individuals eligible for indirect tax repayments.

State-wise Tax Collection

Generally, Maharashtra is the highest tax-collecting state. In April 2025, ₹41,645 crore was collected from Maharashtra, an 11% increase from the previous year. This was followed by Uttar Pradesh at ₹13,600 crore, Bihar at ₹2,290 crore, and New Delhi at ₹8,260 crore. States like Haryana and Rajasthan also increased their contribution to tax collection.

Increased Tax Collection in Maharashtra and Karnataka

Following Maharashtra, Karnataka collected the highest amount of tax. Furthermore, an increase in tax collection was also observed in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. State governments are continuously focusing on GST compliance and tax collection measures to strengthen their economies.
