26/11 Mumbai Attack Suspect Tahawwur Rana Arrested and Imprisoned in Tihar Jail

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the prime suspect in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, has been arrested by the NIA (National Investigation Agency) and brought to India from the United States. Upon arrival in India, Rana has been incarcerated in Tihar Jail, assigned prisoner number 1784. He is being held in a high-security cell, in the same section of the jail previously occupied by notorious underworld don, Chhota Rajan.

New Delhi: Tahawwur Hussain Rana, accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks, has been brought to India and imprisoned in Tihar Jail. He is now identified not just by his name, but by his prisoner number – 1784. Following a lengthy legal process in a US court, Rana was extradited to India in April 2025. After 29 days of questioning by the NIA, he was transferred to a high-security cell in Jail number 2 of Delhi's Tihar Jail. Interestingly, this is the same jail where underworld don Chhota Rajan was once imprisoned.

A High-Profile Prisoner in Solitary Confinement

Tahawwur Rana is kept in a solitary cell in Tihar, with no access granted to other prisoners. TSP (three-tiered security management) personnel are deployed to maintain 24x7 surveillance. Their aim is to ensure that he is not attacked and does not attempt suicide. Even staff access to the cell is strictly limited to those on duty.

According to NIA sources, during interrogation, Rana denied his role in the Mumbai attacks but admitted to his long-standing friendship with David Coleman Headley. However, the investigating agency possesses significant digital and documentary evidence that can prove Rana's involvement in the conspiracy.

Voice Samples and Next Steps

The NIA has already collected Rana's voice and handwriting samples. Sources indicate that the agency is preparing to conduct a polygraph test (Lie Detector Test) soon. It is believed that the agency is pursuing this additional procedure due to a lack of cooperation from Rana during questioning.

The Prisoner's Requests: TV, Clock, and Books

While in Tihar Jail, Rana requested a television and a clock to stay informed about time and news. The jail administration complied, installing an LCD TV and a wall clock in his cell. He also requested books in English literature and writing materials (pen and paper), which were provided. This clearly shows that despite being held in high security, his mental state and intellectual needs are being considered.

Rana has requested permission to speak to his family over the phone. However, this permission has not yet been granted due to security concerns. This request can only be fulfilled after obtaining court and investigating agency approval.

Government's Legal Preparations

The government has constituted a special team of lawyers to prosecute Rana. This team is led by India's Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta. He is assisted by Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, senior advocate Dayan Krishnan, and advocate Narendra Mann. This team will present evidence in court and strengthen the process of prosecution in India following his extradition.

The government's intention is clear: to secure convictions for those responsible for the Mumbai attacks. Tahawwur Rana's case represents a diplomatic and judicial test for India. The successful handling of this case will send a message that India will not compromise on terrorism and is committed to bringing every culprit to justice.
