Kolkata: This year, Kolkata's ISKCON Rath Yatra will break a 48-year-old tradition by using tires from Sukhoi fighter jets on the chariot. This change is significant from both technological and traditional perspectives.
ISKCON's Kolkata Rath Yatra is a prominent symbol of Indian culture and religious sentiments. Millions of devotees participate annually, worshipping Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. This year will witness a major change, breaking a 48-year-old tradition. Sukhoi fighter jet tires will be used on Lord Jagannath's chariot.
Breaking a 48-Year-Old Tradition
For the past four decades, ISKCON has used Boeing aircraft tires on Lord Jagannath's chariot. These tires had become so old that replacement efforts had been underway for 15 years. Obtaining Boeing tires had become extremely difficult. Therefore, ISKCON decided to use Sukhoi fighter jet tires. The Sukhoi tires' diameter is comparable to the Boeing tires, making this a viable option.
Selection and Process of Using Sukhoi Tires
ISKCON spokesperson Radha Raman Das explained that when ISKCON requested quotations from the Sukhoi tire manufacturer, the company was surprised. The company officials couldn't understand why anyone would want their tires for a chariot procession. ISKCON subsequently explained the situation to the company officials and even showed them the chariot in Kolkata. Following this, the company provided ISKCON with four tires. The process of fitting them onto the chariot is currently underway.
A Unique Confluence of Technology and Tradition
This change is not merely technological; it symbolizes the fusion of tradition and modernity. The incorporation of modern technology into a religious event signifies a new direction. Using Sukhoi jet tires will improve the chariot's speed and safety. This step also reflects ISKCON's progressive thinking and innovation.

ISKCON's Rath Yatra in Kolkata is not only a symbol of religious faith but also a part of social harmony and cultural celebration. Thousands of devotees participate annually and witness Lord Jagannath. ISKCON organizes this procession with great fanfare, attracting devotees from India and abroad.
