Rahul Gandhi Faces Non-Bailable Warrant
Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, faces mounting legal troubles. The MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, has issued a non-bailable warrant against him, mandating his personal appearance before the court on June 26, 2025. The court also rejected Gandhi's application for exemption from personal appearance.
Details of the Case
The case stems from a political speech delivered by Rahul Gandhi in 2018. On March 28, 2018, during a public event, Gandhi used b words against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Following this, BJP leader Pratap Keshari filed a defamation case against Gandhi in the Chaibasa CJM court on July 9, 2018.
Subsequently, following a High Court order, the case was transferred to the MP-MLA Special Court in Ranchi on February 20, 2020. Later, the case records were sent back to the MP-MLA court in Chaibasa. The judicial magistrate took cognizance of the matter and issued summons to Rahul Gandhi.
Non-Appearance in Court
Despite repeated summons, Rahul Gandhi failed to appear before the court. Initially, a bailable warrant was issued due to his absence. Even after this, when he did not appear, his lawyer filed a petition in the Jharkhand High Court to stay the warrant. However, the High Court dismissed this petition on March 20, 2024.
Following this, an application for exemption from personal appearance was filed on behalf of Rahul Gandhi in the Chaibasa court, which was rejected. The court has now issued a non-bailable warrant, mandating Rahul Gandhi's appearance on June 26th.
