Much of North India, including Delhi-NCR, is currently experiencing heatwave-like conditions, with temperatures reaching record highs. Life is being significantly impacted by intense sunshine and hot winds.
Weather Update: A severe heatwave is sweeping across several North Indian states. People in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar are suffering from intense heat and sunstroke. Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR is expected to experience thunderstorms and rain in the coming days, offering some much-needed relief. In contrast, Assam and Kerala are experiencing different weather patterns. Assam is grappling with waterlogging due to incessant rainfall, while Kerala anticipates the monsoon's arrival earlier than usual this year.
Delhi-NCR: Thunderstorm and Rain Alert
There is welcome news for Delhi residents. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), light rain and dust storms are likely in Delhi-NCR over the next three days. Strong winds, with speeds of 30-40 km per hour, are expected until May 25th. In some instances, wind speeds may reach 50-60 km per hour. These weather changes may lead to a drop in temperature and some respite from the heatwave. The IMD clarified that the likelihood of a heatwave continuing for the next seven days is low, bringing significant relief to Delhi's citizens.
Uttar Pradesh: Heatwave Persists, Rain Expected
The heatwave in Uttar Pradesh continues to cause hardship. Temperatures in cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, and Varanasi have exceeded 44°C. However, the meteorological department has forecast rain, thunderstorms, and b winds in several parts of the state until May 25th. Warnings have been issued for western and eastern UP districts regarding thunderstorms and winds gusting at 40-50 km per hour. This is expected to lower the maximum temperature, providing some relief from the extreme heat.
Bihar: Weather Changes, Heavy Rainfall in Seemanchal
The weather in Bihar has shifted due to reduced intensity of westerly winds and the influence of easterly winds. Heavy rainfall has been reported in the Seemanchal region, including Araria, Kishanganj, Supaul, and East Champaran. Strong winds with speeds of 40-50 km per hour are still expected in these areas. Patna and central Bihar will continue to experience humid heat, though some light showers are possible. While the temperature change won't be significant, the increased humidity may offer some comfort.
Rajasthan: Heatwave Continues
Rajasthan is currently experiencing a severe heatwave. Temperatures of 46.4°C in Pilani and 46.0°C in Churu have been recorded. A heatwave warning has been issued for Bikaner, Jodhpur, and several areas of Shekhawati for the next 3-4 days. However, light rain is possible in Udaipur and Kota divisions. Surface dust storms with speeds of 30-40 km per hour are expected in Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions, potentially reducing visibility.
Assam: Heavy Rainfall Impacts Daily Life
Heavy rainfall in Guwahati, Assam, over the past few days has caused significant difficulties. Residential areas and roads are experiencing waterlogging. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the western and southern parts of the state for the next three days. Rainfall could reach 200 mm in some areas, raising concerns about potential flooding. Authorities have issued alerts, urging people to remain vigilant.
Kerala: Early Monsoon Arrival
The monsoon is expected to arrive in Kerala, a southern state of India, earlier than usual. The meteorological department predicts a high probability of monsoon arrival between May 23rd and 27th, preceding the usual date of June 1st. If this prediction is accurate, it would be the first time since 2009 that the southwest monsoon reaches Kerala so early. Meteorologists believe this early monsoon could be a positive sign for agriculture and water resource management.
