Under the ongoing health reform initiatives led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, 27,375 new Asha workers will be recruited. The state health department will implement this recruitment drive by 2025.
This recruitment of Asha workers will not only ensure accessibility of healthcare services to the last individual but will also strengthen the healthcare infrastructure in both rural and urban areas.
Health Minister Gives Green Light
State Health Minister Mangal Pandey announced this recruitment drive after a high-level meeting held on Tuesday. He clarified that the recruitment process will be completely transparent and will be completed within a three-month timeframe. A total of 21,009 Asha workers will be selected in rural areas and 5,316 in urban areas. Additionally, 1,050 Asha facilitators will also be appointed.
Selection Process Outline
In rural areas, the selection process will be conducted through Gram Sabhas, with the head of the respective panchayats playing a crucial role. In urban areas, this responsibility has been assigned to ward councilors, who will identify eligible candidates in their respective wards. During the selection, qualifications, social participation, and regional needs will be prioritized.
Recruitment Process Accelerated by Chief Minister's Initiative
The Health Minister stated that under the guidance of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the department is actively working to fill vacant positions. Recently, advertisements have been published for over 35,000 health-related positions in the state. This new recruitment of Asha workers is part of the same initiative, aiming to build a smooth and robust network of healthcare services, from primary care to specialized services.

An increase in their numbers will significantly improve the quality and reach of these services.

He instructed that there should be no shortage in services like dialysis, emergency care, and pathology tests. He also ordered an increase in the number of beds in critical care units. Special attention was also given to the proper maintenance and repair of oxygen plants established during the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister Pandey said that the maintenance process should be initiated promptly to maintain the functionality of these plants to avoid any shortage of oxygen in an emergency.
Expansion of Ambulance Services
The Health Minister also gave instructions to make ambulance services more effective. He said that the number of ambulances will be increased to ensure timely referral and safe transportation of patients, so that people from even remote rural areas can easily access hospital treatment.
