India Approves Development of 5th Generation Stealth Fighter Jet AMCA. Private and Public Companies to Collaborate on the Project, Strengthening the Indian Air Force.

Defence News: India has taken a significant step towards self-reliance in its defense preparedness. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, marking India's first indigenous 5th generation stealth fighter jet. This initiative will not only bolster the Indian Air Force (IAF) but also propel the nation's domestic defense production and technological advancement. Let's delve into what AMCA is, its significance, and its development process.

What is AMCA?

AMCA, or Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, is a modern 5th generation stealth fighter jet, entirely developed within India. This aircraft will incorporate stealth technology, supercruise capability, advanced sensors, weapon systems, and artificial intelligence (AI). This means the aircraft will be able to attack enemies undetected by radar, achieve supersonic flight without afterburners, and make superior decisions during combat. AMCA will provide the IAF with a cutting-edge multi-role fighter jet capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

A Crucial Step Towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The AMCA program, approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, strengthens India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) mission. The project will involve a partnership between private and public sector companies, boosting Indian industries' participation in defense production. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) will lead the project and will soon issue an Expression of Interest (EoI) to encourage participation from numerous companies.

Equal Opportunities for Industries

Both private and public sector companies will have equal opportunities in the AMCA program. These companies can participate individually, through joint ventures, or as consortia. The aim is to foster competition and innovation within the Indian defense sector, leading to a high-quality and cost-effective final product.

AMCA's Technological Features

AMCA will be equipped with several advanced technologies, including a stealth design to evade radar detection. Its supercruise capability will enable supersonic flight without afterburners. Additionally, the aircraft will incorporate an AESA radar, advanced missile systems like Astra and BrahMos-NG, and an AI-based decision support system. Initially, it will use GE F414 engines, but India will eventually develop the indigenous AL-51 engine.

Development and Timeline

AMCA's development will occur in two phases. The Mk1 model will have basic 5th-generation stealth capabilities and is expected to be ready for flight by 2027. The Mk2 model will be more advanced, featuring an indigenous engine and enhanced AI technology, and is projected to join the IAF after 2030. The ADA has finalized the aircraft's design, and the prototype construction process is about to begin.

The AMCA program will enhance India's self-reliance in the defense sector and reduce dependence on foreign aircraft. It will empower India against 5th generation fighter jets like China's J-20 and Pakistan's Project AZM. Furthermore, the involvement of private and public companies will generate employment and foster technological innovation. A successful AMCA could also position India as an exporter of fighter jets.
