A resurgence in coronavirus cases is being observed across India, with the national capital, Delhi, significantly impacted. The situation is growing increasingly concerning, as another COVID-19 related death has been confirmed in Delhi.
Delhi Corona: The shadow of the coronavirus is once again looming over Delhi. With another death reported on Saturday, the total number of COVID-19 fatalities since January 1st of this year has reached 17. While reassuringly, no new infection cases emerged in the past 24 hours, the additional death has raised concerns.
According to the health department, the number of active cases in Delhi has dropped to 557. On Saturday, 154 patients recovered and returned home. A total of 2835 coronavirus infection cases have been recorded this year so far.
Increased Risk for Individuals with Weakened Immunity
Experts attribute the rise in infections to the Omicron variant and its sub-variants NB.1.8.1 and XFG. While these variants are generally considered to cause milder symptoms, they can have severe consequences for individuals with weakened immune systems, pre-existing serious illnesses, or those over 65 years of age.
Investigations into the fatalities reveal that most victims suffered from diabetes, heart disease, asthma, kidney failure, or were elderly. Ignoring COVID-19 symptoms can therefore be dangerous.
The Silent Return of Corona, but the Government Remains Vigilant
Although the current case numbers are significantly lower than previous waves, experts warn against complacency. This new wave of coronavirus is spreading silently. Often, symptoms are absent, yet individuals can still transmit the infection. While the government hasn't announced any strict measures or restrictions, health department teams are closely monitoring the situation.
The availability of COVID beds and oxygen supply in hospitals is being reviewed. Mock drills have also been conducted in several government hospitals in the capital to prepare for any emergency.
Advice from Health Experts: Caution is Key to Safety
Experts once again urge the public to wear masks, wash hands frequently, and maintain social distancing. Individuals with pre-existing conditions are advised to avoid crowds and consider booster doses as recommended by their doctors. Dr. Sanjay Mehra, a senior physician at AIIMS Delhi, states that while Corona has reached an endemic stage, the risk of mutations persists. Maintaining a b immune system through regular exercise, a nutritious diet, and regular check-ups is crucial.
