A 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi late at night. The frequent tremors in recent months have raised concerns about a larger impending disaster. Experts are advising caution.
Delhi: Delhi-NCR has experienced a series of minor earthquake tremors in recent months. Another earthquake, measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale, struck late Saturday night into Sunday. Experts suggest this could be a precursor to a larger earthquake. The capital, situated in Seismic Zone IV, already faces a significant earthquake risk.
Earthquake Tremors Felt Again in Delhi
At 1:23 AM on Sunday, Delhi-NCR once again experienced earthquake tremors. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 2.3 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was about 5 kilometers deep in south-east Delhi.
Although the tremor was mild, the recurring earthquakes in the capital are increasing public anxiety. Many people rushed out of their homes during the night, and the event generated significant discussion on social media.
Why is Delhi Experiencing Frequent Tremors?
Delhi has experienced several minor earthquakes in the past few months. On February 17, 2025, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck, its epicenter near Durga Bai Deshmukh College close to Dhaula Kuan, also at an approximate depth of 5 kilometers.
Why is Delhi a High-Risk Seismic Zone?
India classifies Delhi as Seismic Zone IV, the second-highest risk category in the country. This zone has a potential for earthquakes ranging from 5.5 to 7.0 magnitude, capable of causing significant destruction.
A major contributing factor is Delhi's proximity—approximately 250 kilometers—to the tectonic collision zone of the Himalayan region. This tectonic activity continuously builds pressure within Delhi's earth, resulting in frequent tremors.
