Pakistan Seeks German Air Defense System Amidst Economic Crisis and India's BrahMos Threat

Pakistan, concerned by India's BrahMos missile, seeks to acquire Germany's IRIS-T SLM air defense system. However, its economic crisis poses a significant challenge.

IRIS-T SLM System: India's supersonic BrahMos missile recently posed a serious challenge to Pakistan's air defense system during 'Operation Sindur'. Following these attacks, Pakistan plans to bolster its air defense capabilities.

Plan to procure IRIS-T SLM system from Germany

Pakistan is now attempting to purchase the IRIS-T SLM (Surface Launched Medium Range) air defense system from Germany. This missile system is considered highly effective in countering threats like BrahMos. Pakistan hopes this will strengthen its air defense system.

Chinese technology proves ineffective

Pakistan previously utilized China's HQ-9 and HQ-16 air defense systems, but these proved inadequate against India's high-speed cruise missiles. This is why Pakistan is now turning to Western technology.

Performance of the IRIS-T SLM system

The IRIS-T SLM is an advanced, modular, and mobile air defense system developed by Germany. It has been used in Ukraine against Russian missiles and reportedly successfully engaged over 60 targets. This demonstrates its reliability and effectiveness.

System cost and technical specifications

The system fits within a 20-foot frame, including radar, operations center, and launcher. A single unit costs approximately $200 million. Acquiring such an expensive system will be challenging for Pakistan, especially given its current economic situation.

Increased defense budget amidst economic crisis

Despite a severe economic crisis, Pakistan increased its defense budget by 18%. This led to the cancellation of development projects worth approximately 1,000 billion Pakistani rupees. Furthermore, Pakistan recently secured a $1.8 billion loan from the IMF and ADB.

India-Germany defense cooperation

Diehl Defence, the German company that developed the IRIS-T SLM system, is also collaborating with India on the P-75I submarine project. This includes the Interactive Defence and Attack System (IDAS) for six advanced submarines for the Indian Navy. This project is valued at approximately ₹70,000 crore.
