Train Accident in Thane Due to Overcrowding: Five Dead, Several Injured
THANE TRAIN ACCIDENT: A major accident occurred Monday morning on Mumbai's suburban rail network. At least five passengers died and several others were seriously injured after falling from a moving train between Diva and Mumbra railway stations in Thane district due to extreme overcrowding. The accident happened during the morning peak hour, when a fast local train on the Central Railway was heading towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
Accident During Morning Rush Hour
The incident occurred between approximately 8:00 and 8:15 AM, the time of peak congestion on Mumbai's local trains. The train was traveling from Diva station towards Mumbra station. According to eyewitnesses, the train coaches were carrying many times their passenger capacity. Several passengers were traveling by hanging from the doors. Suddenly, due to a push or loss of balance, dozens of passengers fell from the moving train.
Casualties
Preliminary reports indicate at least five passengers died at the scene. Furthermore, 5 to 7 others sustained serious injuries. All the injured were immediately taken to Thane Civil Hospital and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa for primary treatment. The condition of some is reported to be critical.
Swift Rescue and Relief Operations
Upon receiving information about the incident, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), and local police arrived at the scene. The injured were immediately rushed to hospitals, and efforts began to clear the railway track and restore normal traffic. The accident affected down local services on the Central line, and train movement in the Thane-Kalyan section was disrupted for 20-25 minutes.
Diva-Mumbra Section: A Sensitive 'Hotspot'
This rail section is already known for excessive overcrowding and disorganization. According to railway records, several accidents have occurred in this area in 2024-25, with overcrowding being the primary cause. This section is a major route for trains traveling from Thane towards Kalyan, carrying millions of passengers daily.
