India Battles Severe Weather: Heavy Rains, Strong Winds Lash Multiple States

The effects of the severe thunderstorm and heavy rain that lashed Delhi 48 hours ago are still being felt. The city's weather remains pleasant, with cloudy skies offering relief from the intense sun and scorching heat.

Weather Update: Over the past 48 hours, weather patterns across many parts of the country have shifted, bringing relief from the heat, albeit with b winds and heavy rainfall. Various regions experienced the intense effects of the weather, including Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. The Meteorological Department has warned of continued vigilance in the coming days.

Delhi Sees Some Relief After Storm

The b winds and rain that hit Delhi last weekend have brought down temperatures. While the temperature exceeded 42 degrees Celsius two days ago, it now remains between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius. While residents have found relief from the intense sun, humidity remains a concern. According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi may experience another round of b winds and rain on May 30th and 31st, with winds potentially reaching 50 kilometers per hour. An orange alert has been issued in anticipation.

The weather in Delhi-NCR is expected to be relatively clear from Monday to Wednesday, but there is a possibility of cloudy conditions and thunderstorms from Thursday onwards. Meanwhile, temperatures are unlikely to exceed 36 degrees, suggesting a relatively cooler start to June.

Mumbai Battles Pre-Monsoon Fury

Mumbai has surpassed its May rainfall record this year. Heavy rainfall, beginning late Sunday night into Monday morning, broke a century-old record. 104 mm of rain fell in just one hour, and a total of 254 mm in 12 hours. Colaba recorded a new high of 295 mm. Consequently, many areas experienced waterlogging. Local train services were disrupted, particularly on the Harbour Line between Wadala and CSMT.

BMC and NDRF teams are working to clear the water. The state government has warned citizens against unnecessary outdoor activities between 2 pm and 4 pm. A red alert has been issued for Raigad and Thane districts of Maharashtra.

Tamil Nadu Battling Heavy Rainfall

Coimbatore and Nilgiri districts in Tamil Nadu have experienced continuous heavy rainfall for the past two days. A road accident occurred in Coimbatore when a speeding car collided with an auto-rickshaw, causing both vehicles to fall into a ditch. The driver sustained serious injuries. Waterlogging in Singanallur has disrupted traffic. An orange alert has been issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised fishermen to stay ashore. Many schools and colleges have been closed.

North India Also Affected: Strong Winds and Rain in UP, Rajasthan

Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand experienced heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning on Monday. Showers accompanied by b winds brought relief from the heat in Lucknow, Meerut, and Dehradun. Meanwhile, a 10-minute storm in Sakariya village, Rajasthan, uprooted trees and electricity poles, damaging several homes. Gurgaon and Faridabad in Haryana also experienced thunderstorms and rain, impacting traffic.

Gujarat Devastated by Storm

Strong winds and rain wreaked havoc in the Modasa area of Aravalli district in Gujarat on Sunday. Fallen trees blocked roads, and power supply was disrupted in many areas. Reports of damage in rural areas are emerging. The administration has deployed emergency teams to restore power and clear debris in the affected areas.

IMD Alert and Advice

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted adverse weather conditions across several parts of the country for the next 3-4 days. Alerts of varying severity have been issued for major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad:

  • Red Alert: Mumbai, Raigad, Hilly regions of Tamil Nadu
